Abstract
Anxiety disorders are the most frequent psychiatric disorders in childrenand affect adversely their functioning in various, important sectors of their life. According to the literature, girls are more prone to develop an anxiety disorder. A recent survey, conducted on 461 students in 5th and 6th grades of Greek Primary Schools from urban and semi-urban areas, confirmed the findings of the previous literature. It was found that gender significantly influences the appearance of specific phobia (physical injury fears), generalized anxiety disorder, panic-agoraphobia, social phobia and separation anxiety. Specifically, it was found that girls experienced morestress to various events in their lives as compared to boys.It is evident that early identification and intervention, together with the strengthening of parents will facilitatethe psychosomatic development of children with anxiety disorders
