Abstract

Specific learning disabilities have preoccupied the professional community with initial medical definitions. Essentially these disabilities are related to speech, writing and mathematics. One class is the learning difficulties in mathematics, or otherwise known as "dyscalculia” which will be presented in more detail.

Early detection is important in all forms of special educational needs including dyscalculia. The diagnosis is determined through exclusion of other factors such as mental retardation, adverse environment and unequal learning opportunities, including the presence of sensory deprivation or other difficulties (i.e. Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, etc.). Although dyscalculia is a condition or learning disability in mathematics, we cannot attribute any difficulty in recognizing the symptoms. Factors such as stress and fear negatively affect the learning of mathematics. The difficulties faced by children are presented mostly in their inability to know and decode the "mathematical language," a language universally accepted and unknown to children. The math symbols, mathematical words and mathematical text contain codes that confuse children and impede the learning process.

Finally, there is a significant need to identify the individual profile of each student in order to create programs adequately tailored to their needs and learning process. Based on the study of an individual learning profile the conclusions from the intervention of a student from the third grade of middle school will be presented.
