Individual and environmental factors predicting the phenomenon of school bullying
Abstract
The present study investigates the association of school bullying and victimization with students, school and community characteristics, in a sample of 667 middle school students drawn from four municipalities of Attiki with different income and criminality levels. The participants completed a self-report questionnaire designed to assess: (i) students’ sense of school engagement, social integration and school satisfaction, (ii) the psycho-social climate of school, and (iii) the extent of bullying and victimization.
Our findings suggest that the phenomenon of bullying is associated with the quality of the interactions among the members of the school community, and not with exogenous factors that are largely beyond the control of the school.
