Κάτω από τον ίδιο ουρανό…. Ένα παράδειγμα συνύπαρξης Γενικής και Ειδικής Αγωγής
Abstract
A critical challenge as well as a central aim for educational systems regards integrating the disabled children within the school context, ultimately creating the conditions for their integration in the wider social context. According to the Contact Hypothesis (Allport, 1954), intergroup contact, under certain preconditions, can result in prejudice reduction between the in-group and the out-group. The present work presents an applied paradigm of intergroup contact between primary school children coming from two different school contexts, i.e. a classroom of second grade children attending a public primary school in Ilioupoli (Attica) and a classroom of children attending the public Special School for the Blinds in Kallithea (Attica). The art of theater, along with a number of co-operative activities were used as a vehicle to promote intergroup contact between the two groups of children, eventually resulting in prejudice reduction and the promotion of positive feelings towards the disabled children. The initiative was successful in that we observed, at a first level, a reduction of feelings of anxiety, embarrassment or even fear towards children attending the special school. These merits were obvious in children’s comments and general attitudes, as well as in their parents’ positive attitudes and encouraging comments. More permanent gains regard a general appreciation, acceptance of and respect for diversity. We strongly believe that teachers play the most important role for the success of such initiatives.
