Abstract

Former users of addictive substances belong to vulnerable social groups and their participation in adult education programs enables them to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that will contribute to their social reintegration. Therefore, the role of Adult Education is crucial. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that stimulate the participation of adult former drug users in the Transitional Schools of KETHEA in Athens, Thessaloniki and Larissa and at the School of 18 ANO in Athens according to the point of views of their instructors. The interviews revealed a number of motivational factors. An important factor is the avoidance of the tasks at the therapeutic community, as well as the need for former users to continue what they once quitted because of their involvement with the substances. In addition, factors that promote participation include enhancing their self-esteem, social adjustment, occupation, family reasons, the functioning of the Schools and their relationship with the educators.
