Abstract

Introduction: Work is one of the fundamental human rights in all developed countries worldwide. In particular, work or, more precisely, the right of people with disabilities to work is the final stage of their long and complex rehabilitation process that affects their social integration. However, lack of adequate education and information leads many young people with disabilities to enter the labor market without having received first the necessary preparation to meet the demands of a dynamic and competitive working environment.

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to investigate the views of parents of students attending vocational training schools, locating in  Piraeus and Egaleo, in order to find out, if and to what extent, they know, what kind of employment opportunities can be offered to their children, after graduating from these particular schools, if and to what extent they know, if their children have any inclination to specific laboratories and specific disciplines, and, in short, to find out,  whether they have ever approached a specialist in order to receive counseling and professional guidance for their child.

Method: To achieve the purpose of the present survey, an informal questionnaire was issued to three vocational training schools locating in the western suburbs. In particular, forty five questionnaires were given, of which twenty six were answered. The education of the parents, the profession of them, the gender of the parents, the gender and the age of the student and the place of residence were taken seriously, during the process.

Conclusions: The analysis of the questionnaires concluded that the majority of parents did not refer to a specialist in order for their child to receive professional counseling and guidance. Most parents were found not to have been aware of their children's appeal to specific workshops of their vocational training schools, and therefore did not know what kind of professional opportunities, were appropriate for their child's special abilities.
