Self esteem is the concept somebody has for themselves and the sense of their personal value. According to some researches gifted children show positive self concept and high self-esteem as it refers to their academic success, whereas according to other findings theyare dissatisfied with respect to their performances and have negative self concept. Furthermore,a mismatch between capabilities and performance is often observed. Personal and environmental factors seem to play an significant role in educational
underachievement of gifted kids. As far as the personal factors are concerned, these are the following : different ways of approaching the learning process , difficulties in creating friendshipswith peers, external locus of control, low self esteem and high expectations from selfand others. Both lack of challenges at school environment and conventional school system contribute to underachievement. Moreover a group of children that may present low success, are the double (or twice) exceptional students, term which refers to gifted children with speial educational needs. Therefore educational policymaking adjusted to the needs of gifted kids is essential and mandatory.
