Abstract

This paper presents the design, implementation and results of an educational intervention that utilized the educational game theory in the subject of Ancient Greek Epic Poems. A board game with specific educational objectives was created and administered to a group of 13th years old students attending a Special Education High School. The aim of the intervention was to utilize the techniques of game-based learning (GBL) in order to promote students' motivation and active participation. The use of GBL elements in the teaching process is a modern educational approach that applies the strategies of Constructive teaching model. Students participated in a collaborative and experiential learning process. While playing a board game, students not only understood Odyssey's narrative course, but also recognized the main characters, their role, and reviewed important concepts and themes that were taught during the school year. Final learning outcomes allow for a positive evaluation of this project and highlight play as an important learning tool that encourages active involvement and at the same time makes exam preparation a pleasant experience.
