Abstract
The current proposal focuses on the cultivation of empathy and the culture of “different” through literature. The main purposes of the research that took place were the degree of impact of the literature text to the students, the multifaceted growth of empathy and the configuration of diversity conscience through playful and joyful reading activities. To be more specific, there was a teaching intervention that lasted two weeks, to 22 students of the sixth grade of the 5th primary school of Piraeus. Using the literature book of Evgenios Trivizas “The last black cat”, we used a qualitative method of analysis and carried out an action research. Research data was collected by completing specially formed worksheets that were given in different phases of the intervention and from pre-check and post-control questionnaires. After the completion of the intervention, the findings of the research showed a medium to a high degree of the empathy of students, while there was a change in negative ways of behavior and thought of children towards “the different” to a satisfactory degree. Finally, it is worth noting the positive response of students to “the love of reading” action and the creation of a positive group climate within the classroom.
