Abstract

Developing executive functions (inhibition, working memory and cognitive flexibility) at preschool age can be fundamental, as they are cognitive functions that are closely connected to school readiness. Additionally, they are related to skills for future academic success (e.g. mathematics, reading), but also to positive psychological and physical health. Activities that enhance executive functions are those that are oriented to movement, like traditional games, martial arts (e.g. tae kwon do), physical activity or activities that combine physical exercise and mindfulness (e.g. yoga). Designing curricula that will develop executive functions at preschool age should be focused on the KNOW/ DO/ BE triplet, along with teaching metacognitive strategies that will boost children’s happiness, pride, creativity and self-confident.
