Integration and mainstreaming of a child with cerebral palsy in a general education classroom: A four-year case study

Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to describe the case study of a child with cerebral palsy who participated in an individualised intervention programme in the form of shadow teaching from 2013 until 2017. The programme was designed to promote the integration and inclusion of the student in a general education classroom. The first section of the presentation includes key information about cerebral palsy and its particular features, followed by the particularities of the educational process involving students with motor impairments, as well as the psychological profile of the students in relation to the motor issues and the difficulties they face discovering the world using their entire body. Afterwards, the presentation outlines the psychosocial profile of the student at the time he started school, the educational goals set per school year, the interventions that were implemented, and the results of the programme. In addition, the importance of the family’s participation in the programme will be stressed, as well as the significance of the school’s and the teachers’ involvement in order to achieve the best possible integration outcomes for the student.
