Abstract

The present assignment refers to the Finnish education system, which is at the heart of international interest. This stems from the high performance of Finnish students in the PISA competition, in which they occupied first places among their peers from 43 countries. Therefore, this paper will examine the general principles which govern the education system in question and render it an example for all European countries, as well as some more key factors that differentiate it from the other education systems regarding structure, organization, administration, financing, curricula, the quality of education as well as the practices applied. In particular, the present paper will highlight the main causes that make this education system so successful but also some problems it faces. Nevertheless, in respect of the overarching goal of creating a knowledge-based society and applying specific practices and programs, it turns out that its positive characteristics outweigh the negative ones and, therefore, the learning outcome is very positive.

The purpose of this paper is to make the general public aware of everything they need to know about the Finnish education system. The ultimate goal is to discuss, through bibliographical references, all the system's successful applications, in order to encourage the Greek state and teachers to adopt some of them so that the Greek education system becomes more effective.
