Abstract

The purpose of the present paper, comprising part of a wider research, is to present some early results of a study on the relation of the first and second language in writing by junior high school students. In particular, the study focuses on whether there is transfer from the first language to the second in relation to the writing skill. The study was carried out in a junior high school of Greece and 26 students (12 boys and 14 girls) of the third grade participated in it. The Greek language was the mother tongue and English the second language of participants. The students were asked to fill in a questionnaire, investigating their attitude towards L1 and L2, the strategies they employ and their perception of their L1 and L2 writing performance. The data collected, which were statistically analysed, produced some interesting findings. It was revealed that students perceive writing in Greek and English as similar procedures and are generally positively disposed towards writing in both languages. Also, it was found that they employ similar writing strategies and that mainly implement the text-based approach to writing in both L1 and L2.
