Abstract

The present study focuses briefly on the gifted Education in the Netherlands, that takes place in the primary, as well as, secondary education.  As in most European countries, gifted students are not mentioned explicitly in the national legislation, as they are included in the group of students with special educational needs. Nevertheless, there seems to be an abundance of services and organizations that support gifted students within the school curriculum as well as after school hours. Those services may include the production of individualized educational material by the teachers of the schools, enrichment classes, extracurricular activities and competitions. There are provisions for grade skipping during primary and secondary education, while certain classes in Master’s programs in Dutch Universities are offered for the highly able. In general, despite the fact that giftedness is not included in the legislation and there are not specific regulations to be followed, the country seems to offer several provisions so as to support the gifted students in developing their full potential.
