Proposed Curriculum for Language Arts: Teaching Literature
Abstract
The purpose of this project is to present a program for teaching Greek Literature to gifted students. A lot of researchers (Assouline & Gross 2004, Sternberg 1981, Van Tassel Baska & Stambough 2006, Dabrouski 1989, Winebrenner 2001) have tried to describe the particular characteristics of these students. Due to their asynchronous development differentiated teaching and assessment is required.
In particular, we believe that Literature enables the development of their critical and creative abilities, as these students are identified by their well-developed linguistic competences. Therefore, we prepared a program, which will be addressed to students, who will be 11 and 12 years old, that is students from the last two classes of Greek Primary education, the 6th grade in other countries. In order to identify the gifted students, we will use scales that provide information regarding the characteristics of giftedness, as well as the Raven's Progressive Matrices Test. Our teaching material will be poetry and prose texts such as novels, short stories, taken from the books “Texts of Modern Greek Literature” which are used by the 2nd and the 3rd grade students (14 and 15 years old) of the Greek secondary school. We will use question techniques and projects assignments in order to develop their ability for critical analysis, creative thinking and to produce original pieces or/of literature. The implementation of this program will reinforce the natural ability of the gifted students to analyze, compose and assess the information that is taught, as well as to elaborate on different subjects.
