Abstract

The purpose of the present research was to record the performance and the possible improvement in spelling with the use of the “Indicator of Spelling Accuracy” of Greek adolescent students with and without Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD) during handwriting and writing with a personal computer (pc). 40 junior and senior high school students with a formal SLD diagnosis and 20 without participated this research. Both groups were asked to write two school essays, one in hand and one with the use of a pc. For the quantification of the data and the differences between the produced texts in spelling we selected “Diagnostical Investigating Tool of Difficulties in Writing of 3rd to 6th elementary class students”, from which we used only the “Indicator of Spelling Accuracy”. From this mathematical type (number of correct words/ total number of words x 100) maximum performance in spelling could reach 100. Students with SLD scored an average of 69,9 in spelling, while writing in hand and 93,7 when writing with the use of a pc. Students without SLD scored an average of 96,9 and 98,4 respectively. They were improved but not to the degree students with SLD were.
