Abstract
The purpose of this research is to study the level of numerical ability of a child with a standard development of preschool age. A qualitative approach was used for the needs of investigating the above purpose. More specifically, a case study was conducted on a child of preschool age, of standard development, by conducting a series of tests based on the Logical-Mathematical Thought Criterion: LogMath (Delikanaki,2007). Moreover, the methodical technique of unstructured child observation was used during the allocation of the criterion for recording the student’s response time, the occurrence of avoidance strategies and the promptness of the responses. In addition, the methodological technique of the semi-structured interview was used on one of the parents of the child studied, in order to outline his profile as well as on his nursery teacher to cross-check the data collected from the tests conducted, related to the Numerical Ability of the Child. The combination of methodological techniques allowed to perform methodological triangulation, so as to explore the issue on a multifaceted basis and to produce reliable and valid findings. With regard to the results obtained from the qualitative method, the child responded to a great extent in counting numbers from 1 to 13. Also, there was a difficulty in the activity related to maintaining the number after layout. He was also able to recognize all the numeric symbols from 1 to 10. Finally, the level of solving oral numerical problems involving addition or subtraction was evaluated as fairly good, with difficulties being noted only in the more complex problems.
