Abstract

The Greek educational system does not escape the structural weaknesses of the Greek public administration. Centralization, bureaucracy in the administration and the great dispersal of school units in our country are the essential characteristics of the Greek educational system. The international and European developments are shaping new educational requirements for the Greek educational system to respond.

The occasional attempts of educational reforms provided both in the content of the education and the management structure have failed to be completed, due to external reactions of powerful ideological groups and internal resistance of corporate interests.

It is evident that no education policy can succeed if it does not interfere with the qualitative characteristics of its teaching staff in all aspects of  the  education system, that is, its organization and structure, content and teaching methodology.

The science of Management as well as the good practices and experiences of EU countries identify the necessary levels of corrective action required for the Greek educational system and its administration. Forming a framework for long term strategic is regarded to be a prerequisite for the upgrading of the education provided.
