Cognitive abilities of students involved in school bullying/ victimization incidents

Abstract
School bullying/ victimization occurs between peers, involving both physical and verbal violence. It refers to a systematic, continuous set of behaviors which is caused by a person or a group of persons in order to gain power, prestige or other goods (Espelage& Swearer, 2003).
The role one holds in a school bullying/ victimization incident is related to the individual characteristics of the student and determines his or her behavior (Salmivalli et al., 1996). IQ affects whether an aggressive behavior will manifest or not, as well as the form it will take (Papadatos, 2003· 2004).
The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between the mental level of the students involved in school bullying/ victimization and their role in the incidents. The sample consisted of 85 students attending the 5th and 6th grades of primary schools in the Attica region. The Olweus Bullying Questionnaire (Olweus, 1996) and the Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices (Raven, 1984) were administered.
The data analysis revealed a correlation between the mental level of the students involved in school bullying/ victimization and the roles that they adopt in these incidents.
