Abstract

Drawing is an integral part of pre-school education which helps infants, but also children to understand and process their surroundings. The study of the relevant bibliography, highlights the importance it possess in the evolvent and development of the intellectual and cognitive processes of the infant.

In our research we studied the human figure, in drawings produced spontaneously by two infants. The aim is to understand how young children combine, separate and transform information, construct and form mental representations.

We have noticed that as children draw, with the help of their perception and mental capacity, they bring to mind the details that make up the subject. They invent symbols in their attempt to capture their knowledge and experiences on the designing surface, which they try to combine in the right way and in the appropriate order on their goal to create a drawing. The drawing sequence determines the number of details that a figure brings and the ease with which it will emerge or be further developed, while bad programming can lead to 'random' discoveries of drawing solutions.

In conclusion, drawing is for infants and young children a process with intense intellectual parameters and essential for their mental development.
