Abstract

It has been a long time since giftedness was considered a distinctive feature among boys, while girls, by default, were characterized as non-gifted. However, starting from daily interests and idionynchratic aptitudes in school courses and diversifications in academic and social self-perceptions, a lot of research has determined that many gifted girls tend to confirm the stereotypes, which family and school have created, since they do not consider that their achievements are attributed to their abilities, rather than external factors. Moreover, society’s tendency to confirm conventional stereotypes seems to be a significant contributor to the self-fulfilled prophecy that girls succeed only in certain areas. A lot of research integrates gifted girls in the so-called “high-risk groups”, since it is realized that their giftedness and its talents are less usually detected, contrary to boys, and this results in them not receiving enough feedback from their educational surroundings. This text aims to offer a brief overview concerning what was mentioned above and inform the readers about the current scientific background regarding gender stereotypes and their impact to the development of the giftedness of these girls.
