Abstract

Introduction The theory of self-determination theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 1985a, 2000) proposes a multidimensional analysis of work incentives by combining both internal and external behavioral regulation mechanisms. The purpose of this research was to investigate the work motivations of students of the 3rd Grade School in Greece, as they are close to the transition from school to work. The analysis was based on SDT by adapting the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale-MWMS to the population under study (Gagné, Forest, Vansteenkiste, Crevier-Braud and Van den Broeck, 2014). Method The data were obtained from a sample of students aged 17-18 years from GEL in Athens (N = 203, ΜΟ = 17.58 Τ.Α. = 0.50). The psychometric properties of the scale were studied, namely the factorial structure and its degree of reliability. Results Confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the statistical indicators (x2, GFI, TLI, CFI, RMSEA, SRMR) not to confirm the manufacturer's original scale structure but to be close to the desired levels. Investigational factor analysis also showed a differentiated structure relative to the original scale. Conclusions The results of the research provide the basis for further study of the work motivations of students of the 3rd grade. They also raise an important issue as to whether Greek students at this level emphasize external incentives for material rewards for their future work within a context of socio-economic uncertainty and complexity such as that of Greek society. This research is the first attempt to assess the work motivation of pupils in Greece based on SDT.
