Educational Approaches in Teaching Children with Autism
Abstract
Autism belongs to the Family of Diverse Developmental Disorders (IHD). It is a lifelong disability and the role of education focuses on improving the person with autism by understanding needs and implementing specific programs. Based on the concept of integration in Education, all individuals have the right to participate in the education system to promote their personal development in all areas. A child with autism can be enrolled in an educational setting from the age of 4. The creation of analytical training programs is important as it adapts the education to each pupil's cognitive needs, exploits his / her interests and capabilities and helps in generalizing. The evaluation identifies acquired and emerging competences as well as points where there is a lack of skills. In the sense that people with autism have no inferior but different way of perception and understanding, the role of the educator is to help the individual in understanding and responding to the demands of his / her surroundings, while respecting the particularities of the person with autism. Children with autism learn better when there is a program and structured teaching. In the present study the educational approaches are considered at a global level, according to the modern developments and a critical evaluation is made of them in the context of Greek reality and education.
