Abstract

Children with speech disorders show marked deviations from the limits of the typical development of a spoken language. Their existence coincides with difficulties not only in the academic performance of the children but also with difficulties in the areas of their social and psychoemotional development. This reveals that speech disorders are beyond an educational, a psychosocial problem. Taking into account the dynamic of these deficits, this paper attempts through the critical review of the relevant literature to present the psycho-social implications of the speech disorders in order to inform and sensitize the modern teacher towards the unfavorable problems of this group of children, in an effort to increase his/her assistance in the work of detection, diagnosis, intervention, evaluation and prevention· different processes in which the teacher plays a specific but a catalytic role. Also, the significance of the study and potential areas of future research are presented.
