Abstract

A debate has been going on in recent years about the role of Experimental Schools. It is said that Experimental Schools do not fulfill the goals for which they were created and are elitist schools that are targeted at particular social strata.

The aim of the thesis is to describe and compare the goals, general objectives and specific provisions of the texts concerning the Experimental Schools in Greece since their establishment in 1929 until today, with emphasis on the two main reforms of 1929 (Venizelos Government) and of 2011 (Papandreou Government).

Principle and "model of analysis" is the scientific position that educational reforms are not independent of the socio-economic, cultural and political factors of the historical moment that are happening. This is a comparative work that attempts, starting from the educational reforms implemented in the Experimental Schools and their correlation with the social economic and the general educational landscape, to explore the objectives set for the role of the Experimental Schools, the administration, teachers, pupils, schooling in them. The comparative view of the legislation of the Experimental Schools leads to a deeper understanding of how the Experimental Schools operate and is a useful tool for the formulation of alternative proposals.
