Abstract

Giftedness is considered to contribute positively to higher levels of educational and professional achievement. However, some researchers have suggested that under certain conditions it can lead to emotional, behavioral and social problems. According to other researchers, the impulsivity, hyperactivity and attention deficit of charismatic individuals derive from psychomotor agitation and are not clear signs of ADHD.  Consequently, there is an incomplete, incorrect or dual diagnosis of ADHD and giftedness. Dual diagnosis refers to students who have high mental potential and at the same time show characteristics of one or more disorders. There are studies that infer that children with ADHD and high intelligence do not differ significantly in clinical features and response to treatment compared to children with ADHD and lower intelligence. Based on their findings, they concluded that ADHD is a valid disorder among people with high intelligence. However, there is still a lack of information on how the demonstration of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity in this particular group of children may differ from others, including (i) non-gifted children with ADHD, (ii) gifted children without ADHD, and (iii) children who are neither gifted nor have ADHD. The aim of this paper is to compare these fields in relation to the characteristics of the students of the above groups.
