Integration classrooms teachers’ needs in Intercultural Education issues
Abstract
This study seeks to examine the views of Teachers of Integration Classrooms (IC) on the need for training on intercultural issues. The survey adopts the qualitative research features, using a semi-structured interview on a sample of eight elementary school teachers from the Prefectures of Samos, Dodecanese, Cyclades and Kavala. The results of the survey showed that the need of IC teachers for information on intercultural education was particularly intense as the multicultural composition of the student population is now a fact in the special education. In addition, the subjects surveyed highlighted the main difficulties encountered in the teaching process of SEN pupils from families of migrants, refugees, etc. As far as the benefits to the educational community are concerned, compared to the lack of intercultural training, they said it was to strengthen acceptance of diversity, and the limitation of xenophobic and racist perceptions by the entire teaching and school population.
