In many cases users’ contributions act as a key factor in the development and implementation of data journalism, contributing both to the production of content and ensuring its social impact. This creates a way of active audience engagement that offers new forms of collaboration between journalists, researchers and citizens.  This paper focuses on audience participation in data journalism. It aims to study contemporary participatory practices adopted by media outlets in Europe and America and to highlight their similarities and differences. The methodology is based on the analysis of eight data journalism projects (case studies) that utilize data from the public. The findings highlight how audience participation is achieved through interviews, social media and open-source maps, with differentiations between direct and indirect participation (e.g. interviews vs. online contributions) and the use of generative artificial intelligence to manage the contributions. The analysis and discussion provide the basis for proposing directions for future research.
