Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) already plays a considerable role in how content is created and presented, while the abundance of tools and their ease of use have created a wide field of experimentation across domains that combine technology with traditional forms of expression and communication, such as the design of interactive digital narratives (IDN). This paper presents the evaluation of interactive narratives designed for digital cultural applications with the use of GenAI. The study employs a comparative study between a human-machine interactive design approach with an existing human-authored work serving as a benchmark. The comparative study followed a qualitative approach, analyzing discrete narrative elements in GenAI-produced outputs from four different applications (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini). The aim is to investigate whether—and to what extent—such tools, when used with appropriate prompts, can be employed to design interactive narratives, functioning either as co-creators or as autonomous creators. The findings provide significant indications regarding the capabilities and limitations of these tools at the time of their use.
